Based on branching structure and leaves laying on the ground I believe this to be a red maple. Sugar maple is also growing in this forest.

Description

I thought this shrub might be elderberry (Sambucus nigra) but after looking at photos online I am less confident of that. The buds are opposite, and the stem, when scratched, has a strong odor - but not the distinct one I associate with elderberry leaves. It is growing in a wet area with clay soil. Anyone recognize it?

Description

This appeared to be a birch based on the seeds (which were too high in the tree to get a photo of) but I have no idea what kind. The bark was cracked like this fairly high up into the tree, and I didn't see any of the characteristic signs of black, white, yellow, or grey birch. I don't see any other species in the flora that fit either. Is there another tree species with birch-like seeds that lives in wet clay forests?

Bark doesn't look quite right for white oak but maybe I've just never seen one this big before. I'm pretty sure this branch came from this tree,, the leaves seem like white oak leaves but are pretty beat up.
