Description: The Hairy Woodpecker is a medium sized black and white woodpecker with a strawberry red patch on its head, and a large bill that is as long as it’s head is wide. A large white spot on its back is a distinguishing characteristic shared with the Downy Woodpecker.

Habitat: Coniferous and mixed forests.
Fun Facts: The Hairy Woodpecker uses its long stiff tail feather to lean against the trunk of the tree as it drills for insects.
