Microcystis is a microcystin-producing genus of freshwater cyanobacteria which includes the harmful algal bloom Microcystis aeruginosa. Cyanobacteria produce two groups of toxin, neurotoxins and peptide hepatotoxins, such as microcystin and cyanopeptolin.
