S. sylvaticus occurs in Europe and central Asia, from Norway through Siberia and the Caucasus to Kazakhstan and Turkey.

S. sylvaticus typically occurs on organic, often eutrophic soils in wet woodland, on wooded river and stream margins and on the margins of lakes and ponds.
