This is a guide to the micro moths of Austin and Travis County, Texas. These are the records that have been verified on iNaturalist and have a research grade ID.
While micro moths are not a true phylogenetic group by themselves it is useful to separate the micro moths from the other moths simply because their very size makes their identification that much more difficult.
There is great variation in size among moths even those that are closely related. As a result I have removed some of the larger moths that are in what are considered "micro" groups and have included some moths that are traditionally in macro moth groups but are similar in size to some of the micro moths. Please see the guide to the other moths of Travis County to find larger moth species. Of particular note are the pyralids and noctuids which show a great variety in size.
This guide will be updated periodically as new identifications are made and new moth species are added to Travis County.
**Note: Guides hold a maximum of 500 organisms and this made it necessary to split the moths of Travis County up into 2 groups.
