A Blue-winged Teal at Waverly Hills Pond in Tallahassee. The dark bill, the white arcs around the eye, the dark eye-line, and the white at the base of the bill help to identify it. I watched it for a good 20 minutes trying to get a peak at its wing to be sure of the ID. It finally flew off showing off its bright blue wing patch. I believe this is a female.

Utah prairie dogs are listed as threatened. Most colonies are sparse, fragmented, and outside well-protected lands. Bryce Canyon National Park houses one of a few substantial populations, and observed predations suggest that the colony plays an important role in the ecosystem of the area. Introduced plague has been a source of mortality in many populations, but dusting burrows with flea killing powder has proved to be an effective way of hindering the disease.
