This species takes the dirt out of its cave. It's skin seems very soft except portions of the body where the hair covers well & has tiny ears
These are blooming all over the Angeles Crest Highway between Charleton Flats and La Canada.
This turtle has a flat, gray shell.
It is no bigger than a foot long.
Their legs are long, and also, gray.
Their mouths are small.
They have a very small, and thin tail.
They like to lay on rocks and feel the sun.
They hide from birds and get their food from pond that they live in. They are well adapted to the harsh sunlight, strong wind, and wet environment that they live in.
This little guy was fairly aggressive and absolutely fearless of humans.
I encountered him near the picnic area of Temescal Canyon park. He kept creeping closer and closer and did not back off from vocal warnings, only leaving when I got up and stomped the ground right next to him.
He had two spots in his fur that could have been a wound of some kind.
At one point he ran under our picnic table and picked up a sugary cracker and ran off with it.
