Helvella dryophila (Oak-loving Elfin Saddle)
Helvella dryophila is associated with Oaks and Helvella vespertina is associated with Conifers.
MycoWeb: https://mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Helvella_dryophila.html (as of 1/18/24)
"Habitat: Scattered to gregarious to cespitose under oaks. Common late fall, winter, early spring.
Edible when cooked.
Comments: Helvella dryophila and Helvella vespertina have historically hidden under the name Helvella lacunosa, a European species not known to occur in North America. Recent DNA sampling has shown at least 11 species in the Helvella lacunosa 'group' in North America. The two common California species can best be distinguished by their habitat, Helvella dryophila is associated with Oaks and Helvella vespertina is associated with Conifers."

Elfin Saddles (Genus Helvella) are identified by their irregularly shaped caps and fluted stems.
These Helvella are listed on Mycoweb:
"Helvella acetabulum
Helvella compressa
Helvella dryophila (Oak-loving Elfin Saddle)
Helvella lacunosa: Helvella dryophila, Helvella vespertina
Helvella leucomelaena: Dissingia leucomelaena
Helvella maculata
Helvella queletii: Helvella solitaria
Helvella solitaria
Helvella vespertina (Western Black Elfin Saddle) "

Comments

Hey Kyle, these comments are for discussion of this observation field. (whats it for etc.) - if you want to add one to your observation, click edit on you observation and add a new field - does that make sense?

Posted by loarie about 11 years ago

I'm struggling to figure out how to use these fields (obviously). Sorry about that. It makes sense, but doesn't seem to work for me.

Posted by kylejones about 11 years ago

hm - if you edit your observation, you should see a 'more fields' box. Just type in Habitat and click on it once it come up, then add a value in the field and click save observation. Does that not work?

Posted by loarie about 11 years ago

Yes, that did work. Thanks. I kept looking for a pull-down list or a way to pick from the "More Fields" lists. Helps to just do it the right way.

Posted by kylejones about 11 years ago

great - glad that worked!

Posted by loarie about 11 years ago

This doesn't work anymore. The list no longer populates when one begins typing a field name in the box.
