We came across the mother and her three cubs in the Ndutu section of Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The cubs were ready to play. we were hoping mom was ready to hunt. There were Thomson's gazelles just across the way. Finally she ambled in that direction, but the cubs were going to thwart any stealthy attack.

The story goes that the shaggy hairs along the nape and back of the cubs make them look like honey badgers, and nobody messes with honey badgers.

Description

Apart from an erroneous slow exposure as dusk falls in Ngala Private Game Reserve, I'm at a loss to explain how I got this picture. But I like the way it has come out, conveying something of the atmosphere of an African Wild Dog lopping along. Read my published travel article about Ngala Place of the Lion. © Andy Withers
