Description

I did the 20 minute bird count out in my garden. My garden is a mixture of native and exotic vegetation. Ranging from Hazelnut trees to Kowhai and a variety of ferns. I sat next to the Kowhai tree which is beside a pond as I knew that birds seemed to be attracted to this area. The weather was fairly overcast with brief periods where the sun would shine however there was no heat. I had been listening to the fantails singing all morning so thought it would be a perfect time for a bird observation. The fantails that I saw came within 3 metres of me. One of the fantails stopped and was pecking into the ground however it didn't take anything to eat. The rest were flying underneath the canopy of the Kowhai trees occasionally resting on the branches.

House Sparrow Passer domesticus

Date

Description

Moved sight of observation by approximately 100m to another area with fruit trees, rose garden and close to poultry pens and Yarrs lagoon.

There was an abundance of birdlife but mainly limited to sparrows, blackbirds, starlings and fan tails.

This area is slightly urbanised but in the middle of farm land with grains and fruits for the birdlife to scavenge off the domesticated animals.

Description

I sat outside for around 20 minutes and saw a blackbird, flying in my back garden. It was a male as it was solid black. I didn't see any females or other blackbirds in the surrounding area. After 15 minutes it flew back and was rummaging around the garden mulch and fallen leaf litter for around 30 seconds. Before it flew away without collecting anything. My garden mainly consists of native plants such as Sophora tetraptera as well as a Muehlenbeckia astonii and a variety of ferns. I did not hear the bird calling to his mate or singing.

Description

This is a 20 minute observation of birds in a suburban location. This sparrow was picking around in the ground for food. It made a distinct chirping noise. It has a black bib on its chest and a dark face making it a male. The house sparrows were either hidden in the Viburnum bush on the property, in the tree tops of two Honey Locust trees or on the ground plane.

Thumb

I've changed all the interaction field names from "Interaction: " to "Interaction->" to stop them messing with the photo tag processing on photo import. When adding photos already tagged with fields to the "Add an observation" page, it was only grabbing the field name text after the colon and so not working properly.

Everything works now that the colon is gone, so long as you use a recognised taxon name. For example, if I tag a photo on my computer with "Interaction->Visited flower of=Rosmarinus officinalis" and upload it, it will get this field added with the taxon Rosmarinus officinalis.

That can save a lot of time if you''re maintaining your own photo library in your computer and tagging lots of photos there and uploading them all at once.
