Thanks michaelrayner, I think you are correct after reviewing my old field guide ( from 1899 by Edward Knobel, updated in 1977) the spikes are correct. I'm new to grasses, sedges and rushes so thanks for your help. I'll find some other more updated sources (the Knoebel text is nearly impossible for starting out).
