That is cool. Was this one dead or alive?

Alive. I don't know if you've gone up to Jepson Prairie when the docents are there but they sweep for inverts and salamander larvae and hand them around for people to look at. Pretty cool.

Awesome thanks for the info. I will have to check it out some time. Is it also just open for the public even when the docents aren't there?

The site is open, but it's illegal to use a net in the pools b/c a lot of the animals there, like this tadpole shrimp and the salamanders, are endangered. The docents are all on permits. Lots of great vernal flowers there in the spring, though, assuming there was rain in the winter.

Ah I see. I would figure it was illegal to net but that is still pretty cool. Are there only tiger salamanders in the park? Sorry for asking so many questions this park seems pretty interesting and I would like to check it out soon.

That's the only salamander that I know of, but you could imagine there being some slender salamanders holding on for dear life. This is a pretty classic CA vernal pool, and it gets absolutely desiccated in the summer, so unless you're a tiger salamander or a spadefoot toad, it's a tough place to live. Definitely check out http://www.solanolandtrust.org/JepsonPrairie.aspx
