Scott, you can tell by looking at the lowest pinna. Actually, the lowest and innermost pinnule on that pinna. It is longer than the one next to it. If it was shorter, for example, it would be D intermedia. If if was longer and also much further from the rachis, it would be D expansa. In our area, those are pretty much your choices with a fern like this. I look forward to finishing the work on Ferns of the North Woods soon. Ferns, clubmosses, horsetails, spikemoss, and quillwort are all I have been thinking about lately. Phew!
