Nephila certainly looks good, not sure why that didn't occur to me before. This looks like the pics of N. pilipes out there, but are their any other local Nephila that we should be considering? What resources to you guys use to ID spiders from this area?
Kenny, Nephilia cf. pilipes is a very widespread species!
Just look at the distinctive markings on the dorsal side of the opisthoma!
You absolutely can not confuse this species with any other species of Nephila which might occur in the same region! I am sure South India has more than a single species of wood spider!
As for the "resources"...I use R. I. Pocok's seminal work in conjunction with Dr. Tikader's Handbook and Platnick's World Spider Catalog and my own field experience! :)
