Comments & Identifications

933-thumb

There are 2 recently described species from the eastern Pacific coast that are very similar in shape and color to D. albopunctata. They are Doriopsilla gemela and Baptodoris mimetica. If interested, you can read about them here and here. Unfortunately, they are nearly impossible to distinguish from photos.

From viewing the flickr image at full size, I believe this is likely to be Baptodoris mimetica. If the gill were fully extended I could ID this for certain, but the shape of the slug, and the fairly opaque character of the notum suggests B. mimetica. Doriopsilla albopunctata is typically broader overall & has tends to have a more translucent notum. From personal experience, B. mimetica is nearly as common at the shores as D. albopunctata.
