I am not sure what this is. Looks like trumpets coming out of the tree trunk

It's a lichenized fungus (i.e. a lichen), and I believe it's in the genus Cladonia, which comprises most of the lichens that form little stalks like this around here, as far as I can tell. If you cut into it and looked at it with a hand lens, I think you'd probably see the symbiotic algae in the form of a very thin green layer (or so I've read; I've yet to do it successfully).
