Description

Along Brushy Peaks trail. Not sure what that is. A seedling? A fern just getting out of the ground?

Ah, very cool. It's a fungus, and I believe it's one of these club coral fungi, generally noted by their largish size and wrinkled sides. My guess is that this is C. occidentalis, but that's mostly through comparison with other members of the genus described on MykoWeb. I think I might have seen one of these in Briones a while back, before I was particularly into fungi, so I'll see if I can dig that up.
