Warwick, RI (Google, OSM) Out of range! Details Hide details

Description

A couple of Monk Parakeets in Warwick, RI. I saw three, then a kestrel (I think) flew by and they all scattered along with a couple others that must have been hiding in the nest. There have been feral populations of these parakeets in RI since at least the seventies.

Unfortunately this nest was removed by one of the utility companies and I'm not aware of any current nests in the state. However there are some active nests around Boston. Hardy little birds.

animals that are introduced but only live in cities are so interesting to me. It's one thing to be invasive but is it invasive if it only lives in cities? Over time animals seem to be adapting to them. If we somehow maintained this level of civilization or whatever for thousands of years we'd have all kinds of speciated species in different cities. Of course... for better or for worse... changes will come.
