Cane-like shrub with compound leaves. three to five oval shaped fine toothed leaflets. The stems are orange brown and spiny. Spines are not tough and just rub right off the stems. Flowers range from fuchsia to red and a 5 petaled blooming around March to June. The berries range in color from red to yellow and are edible, ripen July to August. Found in coastal forests, wet soils, swamps, west of the Cascades.
