Interesting. Was it alive and moving, or are we looking at a molted skin?

It's not moving but it doesn't look like a molted skin either. Maybe it's starting that process.

It's the larva of a beetle in the family http://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/Lampyridae. Not sure what it was doing up on a tree, though.

It has since departed and left behind a molted skin. Unfortunately I didn't see what exactly came out.
