Description

Special because they are both plant-like and animal-like
it is pear shaped and has a whippy tail (a flagella)
photosynthesizes like a plant when there is light, but when it is dark they eat other organisms like an animal
has a bright red eye spot that helps the euglena sense the light
if it becomes too hot or cold, they create a cyst around their body to protect them until conditions are better.

Description

The Difflugia pyriformis is composed of laterally compressed cells, typically 10-16 microns long each. Microns are very tiny units used for measuring cells.
The difflugia builds a shell out of sand for protection, which makes it appear as if it is a mosaic.
The difflugia consumes algae and fungi in very small amounts. It’s trophic level is primary consumer.

Small mass of bright blue algae. It was wispy and non-mobile.
