What
Genus EuglenaObserver
abbykolakowskiDescription
Special because they are both plant-like and animal-like
it is pear shaped and has a whippy tail (a flagella)
photosynthesizes like a plant when there is light, but when it is dark they eat other organisms like an animal
has a bright red eye spot that helps the euglena sense the light
if it becomes too hot or cold, they create a cyst around their body to protect them until conditions are better.

Nematodes (Phylum Nematoda)Observer
abbykolakowskiDescription

What
Peranema (Euglenoid) (Genus Peranema)Observer
abbykolakowskiDescription
small flagellates ranging from 20-70 um in diameter
common in waters rich in organic nutrients and in areas where a lot of organisms are decomposing
moves by projecting straight forward and rapidly flips around their flagella, allowing them to move smoothly through the water
its body can go under extreme contraction and distortion as it moves

What
Genus DifflugiaObserver
abbykolakowskiDescription
The Difflugia pyriformis is composed of laterally compressed cells, typically 10-16 microns long each. Microns are very tiny units used for measuring cells.
The difflugia builds a shell out of sand for protection, which makes it appear as if it is a mosaic.
The difflugia consumes algae and fungi in very small amounts. It’s trophic level is primary consumer.

What
Tardigrades (Phylum Tardigrada)Observer
abbykolakowskiDescription
common name: water bears
They have little arms that they paddle around with and cute little mouths.
They are the strongest animal in existence, surviving all 5 mass extinctions.
They have been taken to space and boiled, and still survived.
They are clear in color and look like little caterpillars that swim around.
They live anywhere with water, from ponds to dew drops.

What
Baker's Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)Observer
abbykolakowskiPlace
Missing LocationDescription
Brownish blob in the pond- Yeast is not usually found in ponds, our hypothesis is that it fell in somehow.
Kingdom-Fungus
Phylum-Sac fungi
A species of yeast used in wine and bread making

What
Genus AmoebaObserver
abbykolakowskiPlace
Missing LocationDescription
Clear blob-like organism. We could see all the organelles in it.
Kingdom-Protozoa
Domain- Eukaryote
A single-celled animal that catches food and moves by extending finger-like projections of protoplasm. They are either free living in water or parasitic (living inside another organism)

What
Cyanobacteria (Phylum Cyanobacteria)Observer
abbykolakowskiPlace
Missing LocationDescription
Small mass of bright blue algae. It was wispy and non-mobile.
Kingdom- Eubacteria
Phylum- Cyanobacteria
They obtain their energy through photosynthesis, which is why it is blueish green (chlorophyll makes it green)
