abowronDescription
Interesting blackberry.
Distinct population/patch growing outside fence of off-leash dog run at Westcrest Park. Large populations of both standard-phenotype rubus bifrons and rubus ursinus are also present nearby in the park. This patch is noticeably distinct in phenotype from both.
Leaflet margins are deeply and coarsely serrated. Margins appear more like rubus ursinus or spectabilis than bifrons, though leaf shape and arrangement match bifrons.
2nd year stems are consistently glaucous but are angular (not round) and have large, robust, widely spaced prickles.
Arching pattern of the canes is dense, but lower to the ground than most rubus bifrons I've seen, more the height of an oversized rubus ursinus. These are growing in a fenced off and unmanaged area of the park, so this is not likely a result of mowing pressure.
Nearby rubus ursinus already had immature inflorescences present. These did not at the time of observation.
Will return to add observations of inflorescence rachis and fruit later in the season.
