Description

The turtle was poised on rock near the river as I walked down a trail in the forest of the National Art Museum here in North Carolina. The neck was striped and the markings on the shell were very notable.

Description

These beetles are known as "bess beetles" and range in size from 20-43 mm. They have a single horn on their head and consist in a color of solid black all over. This beetle was found underneath a rotten log in a damp forest.

Description

Underneath selected logs in the forest near Githens Middle School, these 4.5 inch marbled salamanders were found. Their color is gray and black with silvery or gray cross bands. These salamanders reside in many parts of North Carolina.
