What

True Sedges Genus Carex

Description

ID? A little grass with an unusually showy flower, growing in pine barrens open understory in central NJ. (If I understand grass vs. sedge correctly, this is a grass, as the blades were flat rather than triangular. I have a photo I could post, if that would help.) See note for 'scale bar'; plant ~15 cm tall. EDIT: Nope, a sedge, Carex sp. Thank you (yet again!) to Urtica for the ID, and to the other commenters. Carex pensylvanica is a pine barrens species & seems like a good match in appearance, but can't rule out other spp.

Vaccinium sp, don't know whether V. corymbosum or V. atrococcum. Will try to go back when they are in fruit & see what color the fruit is. Purely in the service of science, you understand. Of course, to fully characterize the fruit, it will also be necessary to study its flavor. And it is important to get as large a sample as possible. Flowers 7 mm long.

Amelanchier canadensis. Showier than Common Shadbush, with denser clusters of neater flowers, having green centers. Spotted these plants from the car blooming in a wet area near a pine barrens pond & went to investigate.

For the Life on the Japanese Knotweed study. There was a distinct dearth of life on these relatively young sprouts, as it happens. Come to think of it, I think that's what I found last year 1 or 2 times when I found a patch & went looking. Is that the general pattern -- one of the problems is that nothing eats it (or otherwise interacts)? Anyway, I did find this pair of ants. If anyone can pin down their ID further, I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated.
