Little baby walking stick! Never seen one before (of any size) -- a new order of insect for me. This shot is blurry but shows shape; other shot is sharp (but not nearly as cool). Found in undergrowth in at the edge of a small patch of woods near a pond. IDed by David Ferguson on BugGuide as the only sp in the area.
This little toad came seeking our ham radio Field Day setup, which was at a park with the banks of the South River estuary on one side of us and a little pond on the other. I went out playing with my camera for part of the time while my husband was playing with his radio. Field Day is a big annual event in which hams 'go mobile', setting up self-contained stations in the field -- part contest (make as many contacts as you can), part emergency preparedness drill, and part party.
