I didn't actually notice this particular one until Ken-ichi pointed it out in my photo, but apparently they are cool.

My photo is from a pond outside the Kasteel de Haar, which is a tourist spot outside Utrecht, but I very frequently see these guys in the canals of Amsterdam.
Edit: Just noticed yesterday that they have a very pointy, curved beak, nothing like a duck (probably because it's not a duck). Also, I was told that Mahler based some of the chords in his first and second symphonies on the noise that the Coot makes.

Not sure what kind of sandpiper it was. Pretty tiny- say, a bit smaller than a Mourning Dove. Saw it on the rocks at the jetty of Meigs Point.

Saw one of these guys in a shallow rocky area on the side of the river. There were also a ton of tadpoles in various spots along the river, at various stages of development.

I'm not 100% sure that it was a great blue, but it was definitely a large heron. Saw it while canoeing on the Battenkill, sometime around noon.

Chickens run wild everywhere in Kaua'i. I think of them as the squirrels of Hawaii.

I spotted this lizard on the side of the trail as I was hiking on the Napali Coast, probably around noon. After looking it up in The EcoTraveller's Wildlife Guide to Hawaii, it appears to be a green anole, but with brown coloring. I don't think it had a throat flap (although you can't tell from the pic), so either it's a female or just a flap-less male.

I saw this Nene (the Hawaiian state bird) along with several other interesting birds at Kilauea Lighthouse, a type of wildlife refuge on Kaua'i.

On a family vacation to Kaua'i, I was walking along Poipu Beach with my dad when he noticed a Hawaiian Monk Seal just lying around sunning itself. It stayed in the same spot for the entire afternoon, only moving to get away from the inward moving tide. Around 5 or 6, it flopped around and swam away. People were taking pictures of it all day, but it didn't seem to mind the paparazzi at all.

I was driving along at night when I almost ran over this little guy. Luckily, I spotted him in time and he scampered off the road.
