Friends thought this might be the umber skipper. Lousy photo.
Not sure what species this is, but I am leaning towards Sonchus asper.
Large patch of this low-growing plant in moist shady area under redwoods.
Unusual to see this and so many other "sprung" wildflowers blooming in October. A wet spring followed by a cooler than average summer was followed by an early October rain.
Many were active about 1/4- 1/2 mile offshore.
