Photos taken with iPhone through dissecting scope and hand lens. This little Juncus popped up in a pot that contained some sand from the Middlebury River. The origin of the seed is unknown but perhaps from the middlebury river area.

Apparently it is common in disturbed areas such as the sides of hiking paths.

This is a fire-dependent species that is common further south but is limited in Vermont. The area around Burlington and Colchester used to have fairly significant pitch pine sandplain forests, but most have been destroyed or altered by development.
