Growing at the back of my apt. complex, there is many many of these at the back of the property. They are actually a nice wind break to the hay field in the back. The height is about 6' tall. Most of the trunks are no more than 3/4" wide to maybe 1" at the most. The berries are covering the plants this late in the fall at time of collection.

On the edge of the hay field, this tree was among many others but not crowded out. It was approximately 12 feet tall having a trunk about 4" in diameter. The branches are distinctly winged, and the leaves are short at about 1-1.5" long.

American Holly (Ilex opaca)Observer

Found in my back yard of my apt. complex. The tree/bush was 4' tall and growing in a small growth of trees that are growing wild. Oaks, a few maple, a few cherry, mahonia, and some spruce are all in this area with the holly as well as many privet. The soil is moist due to a deep leaf top layer over everything. After rains there is standing water in some areas.

Found at the end of a hay field, this tree was about 35' tall with a 7" diameter trunk. Soil was brown top soil. The needles were grouped in 3's per fascicle, and a nice dark green. The cones were still attached to the tree.

This tree was short at 12'. It's diameter was about 1.5". It stood apart from others and did have some small shrubs around it; mostly briers consisting of black berry and other plants with thorns. The soil was brown top soil with a good leafy coverage and moist underneath.

This was found near a man made dam over-flow. The tree was approximately 12" in height and it's trunk was about 2.5-3" in diameter. The soil was moist due to it's proximity to the dam. The soil was mostly brown clay.

White Oak (Quercus alba)Observer

This was East of N. Campbell Rd. approximately 300 yds. into the woods. The tree had a diameter of 8" and was about 35-40' tall in a well canopied area of forest as there wasn't much undergrowth. The other trees in the surrounding area were other oaks, maples, sassafras, tulip poplar. Soil was covered in deep leaf mulch from past seasons and was moist, brown and loamy.

This tree was growing next to a cliff edge so the top of the tree was even with our feet. This allowed us to be able to collect samples that included capsules on the branches with leaves as well. The tree's height was approximately 40's tall. The trunk looked to be around 18" in diameter. The soil was rocky shale with a shallow top soil, next to a cliff edge. Other plants in the area were rhododendron, oaks, sumac, and few maples.

This tree was off N. Campbell Rd. to the left as you travel WNW about 75' from the road. It was near maples, oaks, hickory sweet gum, tulip trees, and sassafras. The soil was moist, brown, and loamy and about 100 yards from a man made lake. The height was 15-18' with a trunk having a 3.5" diameter. Most of the drupes had fell off the feathery-spray that gives it it's "smokey" appearance.

Virginia Pine (Pinus virginiana)Observer

This was the rare pine to be seen in these woods as there are not many at all in this area. It was spindly but had cones on it. Most other trees in the area were maples, oaks, some hickory, and few cherry. It was approximately 20' tall growing in soil that was disturbed years ago to make dams for lakes nearby. Cone is ovoid, needles are grouped 2 per fascicle.

This was a 15' tall tree just into the woods East of N. Campbell Rd. The trunk was approximately 3.5" in diameter. It was among maple trees and a few small oak. The soil was moist, brown, rich, and loamy. Thick leaf coverage over the soil. Many dead branches covered the area.

This tree was only about 5' tall but the leaves were huge. It was growing on the back side of a man made dam as were many others like it along with many Tulip trees. The soil was moist, brown and loamy. The lake was full. Other trees nearby included maples, oaks and hickory.

Southern Red Oak (Quercus falcata)Observer

Sitting at the farthest back right hand corner of the property, this Southern Red Oak reaches out into a portion of a hay field so it was very easy to reach. The tree is approximately 45 to 50' tall with a trunk 12-14" in diameter. Soil is poor due to being quite sandy. It is bordered by a hay field with no competing trees on that side but the other side has maples, a dogwood, and a cherry tree.

American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana)Observer

This tree had fruit on it that were ripe or very near ripe. Most were orange to dark orange and my sample had two that were less than ripe to make for a better sample in the drying process. The tree was 15' tall and had three trunks to it growing in a cluster. Many trees were at it's side making it grow at an angle reaching for light. Maple trees were surrounding it. The soil was poor and sandy, being covered with mosses and very light with grasses.

This tree is at the back of a three residence apt. bldg. It's growing under a large red oak and very near large pines that are across a cyclone fence from it. It is a very shady area but the tree seems to be doing fine and blossoms well every year with decent foliage. The height is approximately 18'. The soil is sandy and poor with lots of moss and little grass nearby.

Found on the NE of the side of N. Campbell Rd. after the curve, next to a split rail fence on the road side of the fence. It was approximately 4.5' tall growing in drier, brown soil. The twigs were smooth on this plant so it was distinguishable from the Rhus typhina (Staghorn Sumac).

This specimen was a sapling that had all three leaf types on one plant among many like it in the area on the ground. No sign of any fruit since they mature in late June-July. Found on the forest floor approximately 225 yds. SE from N. Campbell Rd.
