Description

Sighting and photos (c) corinne.
Field Notes - I found this Bandicoot unfortunately deceased ( Another victim of road kill in our area) along the side of the road. Sadly our area has grown from 2000 to 6000 people in just a few years time and this now having a serious impact on the environment and the native fauna and flora with habitat loss due to excessive tree removal and road kill due to non caring locals speeding in 60 zones... We see the numbers of Kangaroos, Wallabies and other wildlife dwindling by the minute. This beautiful Bandicoot has a coarse fur with brownish tint, short ears and much shorter nose than the Perameles nasuta ( Long-nosed Bandicoot). This one is a Northern Brown Bandicoot- Isoodon macrourus.

Date

April 20, 2019 11:16 AM AEST

Description

Sighting and photos (c) corinne.
Field Notes - What a surprise we had when an old dead tree fell in the garden. We saw this little creature crawling out of the debris a little bit in shock but otherwise safe and sound. It's a baby Squirrel Glider ( confirmed with expert wildlife carer ). We looked if we could find its mum in the neighborhood but no sign of her, so we called Wildlife Rescue and they came to pick her up to have her taken care of by a specialized carer and she is too little to be out there on her own. The Squirrel Glider is a bit bigger than the Sugar Glider. Both species look a like but live in a different environment. Squirrel Gliders live dry forest ( like our garden) while Sugar Glider prefer wet forest. Squirrel Gliders are nocturnal arboreal and can glide up to 90m. Squirrel Glider- Petaurus norfolcensis.
