What
Coyote (Canis latrans)Observer
dawnendicoDescription
I was sitting on a bench next to a trail enjoying the view when I noticed a coyote on the slope below me who was making his way uphill, eyeing me while he circled around. When he finally reached my level he trotted away down the trail until he disappeared around the bend. A second later a big dumb dog came loping along in the opposite direction acting oblivious to the coyote that he had just missed. A minute or so later his people finally showed up.
I wish I could have seen that. They were in the same spot nearly at the same time. How did the coyote hide from the dog? The dog didn't act like he had just seen or smelled anything unusual. I guess the dog was super good-natured and didn't care.

Milkmaids (Cardamine californica)Observer
dawnendicoDescription
This is the only thing I saw blooming Sunday at Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. They were all along the wooded Stephens Creek Nature Trail. On the way back along the grassy Canyon trail I saw a sign saying that blue eyed grass can start blooming in February but I didn't see any.

Beard Lichens (Genus Usnea)Observer
dawnendicoDescription
This was covering a dead tree along with another moss and lichen. A living tree next to it had some too.
There are two similar looking lichen here. This observation is for the ones that have 'round' thalli without a front or a back side (All of ones in the first photo except the one at four o'clock with flat straps)
What
Pacific Poison Oak (Toxicodendron diversilobum)Observer
dawnendicoDescription
This one is interesting because in the middle there are two small clusters of red berries. It’s hard to tell what they’re attached to. Are they part of the poison oak?
