Observed and heard animal in rocks near summit of mountain, above 12,500 feet elevation. My first pika observation. Summer of 1980, 1981, or 1982.
Pika heard calling from talus above trail.
American pikas calling in talus above (northeast of) Pacific Crest trail, south of Cracked Crag.
1 adult seen & heard, and perched fecal pellets found (fecal pellets pictured - they're near-spherical and about 2-3 mm diameter). Habitat was an isolated granitic talus patch, probably <1 ha, some of it unsuitable for pika. Surrounded by low cover subalpine to alpine meadow, tree thickets (whitebark pine, lodgepole pine), and igneous rocks too small for pika use. This is CNDDB element occurrence number 80842 (www.dfg.ca.gov/biogeodata/cnddb/)
