Description

Here is a more typical valve of Ischadium recurvum. Compare it with the specimen at observation #

which has a more pearly inside color, maybe because it is smaller (about 2.75 cm long) than this one, about 5 cm long.

What

Chilean Blue Mussel (Mytilus chilensis)

Observer

fmoretzsohn

Date

October 27, 2018 11:01 PM CDT

Description

This shell was bought frozen at a local supermarket. The package says it was farm raised in Chile, but it does not provide any more details. There were 20 shells (pairs) in one pound. The shells were about 8 cm long. Quite tasty!

A common species locally. The last photo shows a valve of Cyrtopleura costata, of similar size. The latter is one of the most common bivalves at University Beach. Both species are in the family Pholadidae.

Gafftopsail Catfish (Bagre marinus)

Observer

Date

Description

This is one of the largest "crucifix fish" skulls I have seen around here. It is probably from the catfish in the third photo, which was observed in the same beach but a few weeks earlier (note that the skeleton was still mostly intact). The plastic container is 8 cm long.
