Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)

Observer

Date

July 10, 2012

Description

Nesting GBH in Monterey pine along Petaluma River. Five pairs successfully reared young here this spring.

(The photo shows one of the GBH nests. There are two in the pine, and three more in the eucalyptus immediately upstream from the pine).

This colony is in its fifth year. The birds relocated from their colony about a mile downstream when construction on the riverside became too noisy.
