A few in Kingut but many more near Lederman Center. Yellow at the stamens. 7 white petals. Name comes from red stem, especially when you break it open. Wonderful leaf design as well. Some leaves get quite large.

April 10--I held dead and frozen cooper's hawk which looked a lot like SSH, but was not blueish on the head or back. Same stripes on tail.

A bit rare but numerous kingnut hickory trees on Fermilab prairie, in area where I was clearing invasives this morning. Not as shaggy as shagbark. Huge limb extending out from lower part of trunk and reaching out into the open field along side the woods.

At seed house at Fermilab I spent morning preparing seeds, including stripping fruit from Wahoo seeds and soaking seed in water to clean completely. Will take two years to germinate. Not all do. This bush is a bit rare on the site.

I came across at least 10 turtles in a small pond sunning themselves on logs in the water. Sunny, quiet day with no one else around. They seem relaxed and did not dive under water when I came by.
