Small shrub with brilliant red berries from late summer to early winter. Deeply loped thick waxy leaves. Showy cream clusters of flowers with a slightly fishy scent. Contains the same compound as decaying flesh, helps attract pollinators. Long sharp thorns along the branches.

Norway Maple (Acer platanoides)Observer

Deciduous small tree. Opposite, palmately lobed with 5 lobes. This helps distinguish it from Acer macrophyllim. Bark is grey and with minimal groves, in old age the bark does not become deeply grooved as in other species. The leaves develop earlier in the spring and hold on a little longer in the fall, not turning as orange and red as other leaves. Probably due to minimal anythocyanins. It is native to eastern and central Europe and southwest Asia.

Low growing ground cover, self heal has opposite oblong leaves in pairs around the square stem. The dead flower heads were still present. Each flower consists of a two lipped calyx, designed for bee pollination. When in bloom the flowers have are deep purple with lighter hints.
Self-heal grows in open, disturbed areas, healing the land.

Small shrub with alternating branching. Oblong serrated leaves. Apical bud forming. Around 2 feet tall, this was a very spindly specimen. Growing in the teaching gardens near the long house in the swampy area next to sword fern and across the walkway from the skunk cabbage. Appears to be a Rosaceae.

Flat needles, alternate spiral, but due to their flat growth it you can only see the spiral if you look at the petioles, branches horizontal with some swooping. Branches are small at nodes. Thick complex bark with a lot of texture.
