Red tail hawkObserver
jamiepDescription
I was on a treasure hunt this day. Everywhere I turned was another catch! I wanted to get a decent shot of the hawks flying around near home and found this beauty as I was headed back home from the little wetlands on Plainfield. It's amazing what I find within a 1/2 mile radius.

I always go down to our little lake looking for the great blue heron. This year I am finding birds with it that I have not seen here before. The pied billed grebe just popped up from under the water near it.
Half the fun of finding things in nature is figuring out what they are.

As I came around the bend from a walk around the little lake on our town home property I noticed the great blue heron. What I did not expect to see were 2 black crowned night herons sitting with it....a very pleasant surprise.
This is the first time I saw them here.

Something told me to take a walk down by this little wet land just off a main road. The great blue heron and egret were there. I sat on the sidewalk/bike path shooting them. The heron was not all that happy that the egret was close and chased it a couple times.

I wish I could have gotten a better picture of this baby. He was high up and decided to hunker down so I was fortunate to at least catch something. The mom took off right before I got there so I'm not sure if this is a baby cooper hawk.

This year there are a lot of cow birds doing their dance for the females. I don't remember seeing them so much in past years. I'm loving the sounds and the wings spreading and head stands.
What
Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta)Observer
jamiepDescription
When I went down by the lake a few weeks ago there were turtles all over. Little heads popping up, all different sizes. I think a lot of them are red-eared sliders. Not sure if this one is.

I didn't realize we had baby ducks until yesterday. I like it when you can see the little wings or the tongues as if trying to imitate mom.

I have been getting a cranefly landing on my patio screen door for the past several years. This was taken a few years ago. The thing I loved and noticed is there is a heart shaped peace sign between the wings.
What
Great Egret (Ardea alba)Observer
jamiepDescription
The white egret came flying by shortly after an encounter with the great blue heron. There are a couple of places I see them but they are alone. Last year I hit the jackpot in Bloomingdale, Il with so many I couldn't count them all. In the mix was a black crowned night heron which I had no idea what it was.

Been watching the great blue heron and a white egret down by out little lake. The heron was just walking in the water so I asked it to catch a fish. I wound up with some wonderful shots. He proceeded to take it to the shore and left it there. He did not eat it. (?)

I saw these little ones a couple of weeks ago and wanted to see how much they grew. I went looking for them and they gave me some great shots. They didn't seem to mind me, but when they got near other geese and ducks the parents started and the little ones chimed in...learning how to honk like a goose.

What
Green Stink Bug (Chinavia hilaris)Observer
jamiepDescription
I noticed eggs on my patio door screen so I watched them as they changed, until they hatched. I did not know what they were. Looked like faces on masks. The following year I was taking pics of a stink bug because I like the pearl-essence in the wings. That's when I learned what these were.
