Sea Lettuces (Family Ulvaceae)

Description

The sea lettuces were hard to find because they were only located in the northern corner of the tide pools. A group of sea lettuces was found on the side of the rock which was dry, where as the other two groups were on the ground and near pools of water. The coloration was a vibrant dark green and a normal green. The patches were about 1cm tall and they covered an area of 1 square meter.

Red Sea Leaf (Erythrophyllum delesserioides)

Description

Extremely attractive due to its coloration of a unique red. The strands of this algae were about 30cm long and 7cm wide. It appeared to have the same structure as a leaf, with vines running throughout. Most of them were not attached to the rock bed of the tide pools, they were simply laying there.

Description

The hermit crabs were easily spotted due to there orange-red coloration of there outer shell. The shell was 2 1/2cm in diameter. There movement was slow both inside and out of the water. Once startled they hide away in their shell and appear to be lifeless.

Description

These snails, which are gastropods, have a black and purple shell with four whorls. The point often appears to be a whitish color which makes the snails easy to spot. They were fairly small, as they only have a diameter of about 1 1/2 cm. There shell was hard to touch, and the whole organism appeared to be very moist.

Description

The majority of the mussels were found grouped together, while a few were isolated from the rest. They all appeared to be a shinny black, with a slight light brown discoloration. The average size was 5cm long and 2 cm wide.

Description

The rough limpet was found in the areas of the tide pools (during low tide)which was not submerged in water. The coloration ranges from a chalky white, to a earthy yellow tone. They were sessile and often found by themselves, or were occasionally seen in a groups of 2-3. These limpets are also classified as gastropods mollusks.

Description

This algae was found in the tide pools in groups. The coloration was a dark earthy pink in then majority of the algae, and then tips of the algae were white. It felt rough to the touch like a plant, and it was not slimy. The groups of algae averaged 11cm in length and a approximate depth of 5cm.

Green Pin-cushion Alga (Cladophora columbiana)

Description

The green pin cushion algae was located on the dry sections of the tide pools. It was cool and soft to the touch. This algae would patch up in little clumps which were averaged with a diameter of 7cm and a height of 3cm.

Description

The Oligocottus maculosus was hard to spot at first, due to its camouflage. It was about 7cm long and 1cm wide.
The coloration was brown and gray spots. Many of these Oligocottus maculosus' were found through the tide pools. They moved when quick when they were startled, and other than that they floated still.

Description

These starburst anemone were found in shallow tide pools. The outside appeared green, while the tentacles on the inside were a turquoise gray. The anemone's were sedentary. I observed the tentacles which attached to a nearby snail floating in the water.
