I am unsure as to what kind of plant this is. It was found on a ridge covered in oak trees. It was the only kind of flower/plant like it in the area. It had a long stem that ran along the ground.

Felids (Family Felidae)Observer

This scat was found in a very dry location at Pepperwood Preserve. I observed this scat atop a cluster of rocks in the area. The environment around the rocks was very dry and harsh. There were very few trees in the area, mostly small coyote brush and other plants that endure dryness and heat well. The scat was a grayish white color. It was made up of mostly fur and seeds. I am unsure of the animal that created this scat.

Rough-skinned Newt (Taricha granulosa)Observer

This creature was observed in a small stream in a section of calm water. The ravine was located at the bottom of a small Redwood forest. I am unsure as to what species of newt or salamander this is. It had lot's of black speckles on it and it was very small (at most 2 inches). I saw two of them within the same portion of water.

Western Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum)Observer

These Western Sword Ferns were found in a canyon full of Redwoods at Pepperwood Preserve. They were located in a shady area. The soil moisture was damp and cool, but not wet. The majority of the fronds on this fern were unfertile. It appeared to be somewhat healthy, judging by the small amounts damage to it's Pinna.

This Rough-Skinned Newt was found in a small stream of water at the base of a ravine at Pepperwood Preserve. It was roughly 4-5 inches in length.

These Douglass Fir trees were observed under a large oak tree in a ravine. There were about five of them in a close parameter. They had very small pine cones on them (see photos).

This thistle was observed in the shade of a bay tree. It was roughly one and a half feet tall. It had one purple flower at the top.

This garter snake was observed next to a small pond. It was roughly 2 feet long. It was black with three yellow stripes (one along the top and two on each side).

I found this rattlesnake after I glanced roughly a foot to my left while sitting on a rock. It appears to be a baby rattlesnake, but the species I am not sure of. It was about a foot long when it extended it's body.

Discovered in wet area next to a small pond. It was climbing on some green grass very slowly. Others nearby.

These frogs were located within grass. There were numerous frogs in the area. They were roughly 1.5 in at the largest. They were grayish green. Liked to perch on grass as seen in the photo.

This dragon fly was observed in an open grassland area. It had bluish eyes. It was brown and blackish.

This species of newt was discovered next to a small pond under a log. It was the only one found in the area. It was fairly small (roughly 3.5 inches long).

Three different scorpions were observed within roughly 10 feet apart, each under different rocks. The largest one was approximately 2 inches long and 1 inch in width. They were found along a shaded ridge line.

This skink was observed near a small pond. It was primarily black with yellow stripes. It also had a very distinct blue tail. It was discovered under a small log.

This spider was observed adjacent to a small pond and in some tall green grass. It was in direct sunlight and located in the center of it's web with another insect caught in the web. It was primarily yellow and black.

This Cicada was found in some Coyote brush. The bush was in direct sunlight. It began to poke at the skin on the holders arm with it's sucker thing.

California Bay (Umbellularia californica)Observer

This small Bay tree was observed off of a gravel road in a location with a fair amount of cloud cover. The primary photo shown was taken from the underside of the leaf. The underside of the leaf was smoother and the topside was rougher. The tree was the size of a small bush. The soil in the area was somewhat damp. I believe it is a type of bay because of the smell.

I found this oak leaf in a somewhat covered area to the left of a gravel road at Pepperwood Preserve. There was a decent amount of light in the area, but the trees provided a significant amount of shadows. The leaf was smooth on the underside and rougher on the topside.
