Description

Snake was crossing C.R 101 roughly halfway between Hwy 59 and San Diego. The snake was crossing the caliche county road. Surrounding habitat was Tamaulipan mixed brush dominated by guajillo, blackbrush, mesquite, southwest bernardia, whitebrush, agarito, and sweetleaf. Common herbaceous plants included plains bristlegrass, purple threeawn, bufflegrass, dogweed, annual sunflower, cowpen daisy and many others..

Description

Snake was found dead between a greenhouse and a caliche road. Surrounding habitat was a mesquite parkland surrounded by open pastures dominated by hooded windmillgrass, plains bristlegrass, Kleberg bluestem, and at least 10 different native forb species.

Description

I am unsure of the ID on this one, but the toad was outside of a ranch house in Atascosa County. I was walking to my truck, which was parked just off the caliche ranch road. Surrounding habitat was a mesquite parkland with plains bristlegrass, guinea grass, and bermudagrass. It was in close proximity to a greenhouse and outside vegetable garden.

Description

The lizard was on the front porch of the bunkhouse. It had to be between 25-30 cm long. The habitat surrounding the bunkhouse was mowed bermudagrass with an occasional bull mesquite. A shop and multiple other buildings were nearby. Lots of caliche was present due to the roads going in, out and around the house.

Description

The snake was crossing a dirt, ranch road in a relatively open area (25-30% brush cover). Mesquite dominated brush mottes (2-3 meters tall) were interspersed throughout a 200-300 acre area. Grasses, such as Kleberg bluestem, Hall's panicum, and buffalograss, dominated the areas between mottes.

Description

Description

The snake was underneath a large huische tree growing in a low area. Kleberg bluestem, bermuda grass, mexican hat and plains bristlegrass dominated the surrounding area. The snake retreated to the east of its original location and took refuge in a mixed brush community dominated by armargosa, granjeno, mesquite, huisache and prickly pear.

Description

The snake was crossing a dirt, ranch road. The habitat was xeric, with sandy loam soil. The mixed brush community was dominated by blackbrush, with other species, such as armargosa, allthorn, prickly pear and granjeno, present throughout. Common grasses included texas bristlegrass, plains bristlegrass, whiplash pappusgrass, curly mesquite and buffalograss. Common forbs included western wild petunia, false ragweed, and lazy daisy.

Description

On the bottomlands near the Nueces River. The snake was coiled up beneath a young, mesquite "bush" (approximately 2.5 meters tall). Kleberg bluestem, Hall's panicum, and whiplash pappusgrass were near and around the mesquite "bush". Surrounding habitat was a transition zone between habitats. To the north was Tamaulipan mixed brush, to the south was cordgrass/aster flats transitioning into Riparian areas dominated by hackberry, anaqua, ash, and cedar elms.

Description

After stepping over the hole, I discovered the snake inside of it. The sun set was probably 30 minutes after I found it. Surrounding habitat included hall's panicum and buffalograss, interspersed between mixed brush mottes dominated by mesquite. Brush cover was approximately 70 percent.

Description

The slider was crossing a caliche road. It slid off into some standing water after I snapped the picture. Clear skies and humid. Surrounding habitat was mixed brush and bermuda grass. The mixed brush was fairly diverse including granjeno, brasil, mesquite, huisache, desert yaupon, allthorn, persimmon, and armargosa. Whiplash pappusgrass and buffalo grass were growing where the bermuda had not yet taken over.

Description

Found in a small clump of mesquite trees (5-7 trees). Lots of leaf litter and dappled sunlight through the new mesquite leaves. Surrounding habitat was approximately 60% brush cover and was dominated by mesquite. Buffelgrass and kleberg bluestem comprised the majority of the areas between mottes. Texas bristlegrass was most common in the shaded areas beneath the mesquite canopies. The lizard was in the open when first spotted. It quickly took refuge inside of one of the mottes. The weather was hot and sunny.
