I walked right over this little baby rattler and my sister almost did the same. Apparently she has sharper eyes. After taking my pics we walked down the trail and I talked my sister's ear off about how awesome rattlesnakes are. "Hey!" a voice called out from behind us, "Is this your camera?" Apparently in my excitement I just left it on the trail, and this poor, kind dude ran down the trail to return it to me. Classic.
Took me a while to ID this one since most pics out there show white tips on the ray flowers, but the bracts look right (blunt, somewhat straight, not bulging).
Hairs firm but not sharp or stinging. Faint to no orange dots in corolla tube.
Not exactly art, but it's a pretty and unusual plant. I love the leaves.
This and C. exigua always give me trouble, but if I go by Ertter and Bowerman then this is the one: white with rose, showy, petals long and far-exceeding sepals.
