Found in water, along the edge, in the south fork of the McKenzie River. Really no clue. About 2 inches in diameter. Indented in the middle on one side; rounded on the other. Very soft and slippery. Help with ID please!

Saw this guy at the river at CCFC. He/she seemed to be dipping down to the surface of the water repeatedly, kind of like how a female darts about laying eggs on particular plants. Any idea what this behavior is? Just getting water? Finally came to rest on the rocks next to the water, probably pulling out minerals. I could get very close then.
