I had an interesting encounter with A. maynardi this morning (on Little Cayman). They often come to drink at our bird bath, which is a big clear plastic tub with a few rocks in the center for perching. I saw one this a.m. looking particularly attractive, so I whipped out the camera (first photo). As soon as I went to take photo #2, the anole leapt into the water, swam vigorously with much tail-wiggling for a moment, & then proceed to play dead for about a minute. He/she floated crookedly in the water, drifting around aimlessly and slowly lowered itself in the water until only the tip of its elegant nose was out of the water (see photo #2). My husband came to look & decided the anole might be in trouble, so put his hand in to fish it out -- inducing much vigorous swimming & tail lashing until he scooped it up & it leapt for a nearby pot plant. Hs anyone seen an anole play possum before?
