What
Bark Barnacles (Thelotrema lepadinum)Observer
petergerber395Description
There are actually several (at least) lichens in this picture. A forking bone or Antlered perfumed or ?, and some Beaded bone, and what else, Plus a couple of mosses. This seems to be typical on the Red Alder trees on Tiger Mt. and else where in the NW. The Red Alders are supposed to have redish - darkish bark (when you see them in the city), but the plethora of lichens and mosses makes them look mostly whitish in the woods.
What
Shield Lichens (Genus Parmelia)Observer
petergerber395Description
I am guessing about these lichens IDa. but they are cool to see.
On the same tree, there is what I would ID as Common Witches hair?
What
Redwood Violet (Viola sempervirens)Observer
petergerber395Description
I am not certain about my ID of this one. I think I need to see another one with the guide book in my hands to test the details, ie. the markings on the flower and exact shape of the leaves. The trail was littered with these guys. Once I got sensitized to the violets I was seeing them every where.
What
Butterflies and Moths (Order Lepidoptera)Observer
petergerber395Description
Don't have a glimmer on the ID of this critter but it is pretty little one.
What
Licorice Fern (Polypodium glycyrrhiza)Observer
petergerber395Description
This seems like a no brainer. The guide books are clear on this one.
What
Red Huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium)Observer
petergerber395Description
It was not yet in bloom nor were any berries evident. but it is clearly red huckleberry with the small leaves and shape and GROWING on a stump. Yay!
What
Western Sweet Coltsfoot (Petasites frigidus var. palmatus)Observer
petergerber395Description
Not so sure about this id. It seems pretty unique. I have seen this before but not so common as others.
What
Pacific Bleeding Heart (Dicentra formosa)Observer
petergerber395Description
Just barely stating to bloom. Very characteristic foliage.
What
Cascade Oregon-Grape (Berberis nervosa)Observer
petergerber395Description
Not quite in bloom yet, but again, unmistakeable because of the form and leaf shape. These are very common plants in the NW. They grow in my yard and have to be weeded to prevent them from taking over.
What
Pelt Lichens (Genus Peltigera)Observer
petergerber395Description
I am not as confident of the lichen IDs. But this one seems likely.
What
Osoberry (Oemleria cerasiformis)Observer
petergerber395Description
Barely in bloom and camera would not focus on the blooms, but it was clearly an Indian plum bush. Very common in the NW lowland woods. one of the first to leaf out in the spring.
What
Vanilla Leaf (Achlys triphylla)Observer
petergerber395Description
Not in bloom yet but the leaf shape is unmistakeable.
What
Troglodytes Wrens (Genus Troglodytes)Observer
petergerber395Description
Tough picture to get, I could barely see the bird in the view finder and hold the camera still but the image stabilization worked like a champ. They are a cute bird and call is unmistakable.
What
Pacific Trillium (Trillium ovatum)Observer
petergerber395Description
I love these flowers. I have planted them in my yard and they multiply in the right locations.
What
Red-berried Elder (Sambucus racemosa)Observer
petergerber395Description
One of many bushes on the property. My neighbor collects the berries as do the wild band tailed pigeons.
What
California Hazelnut (Corylus cornuta ssp. californica)Observer
petergerber395Description
Not sure what Pojar is saying about the California variation. I have also seen these bushes up to 30 feet high.
What
Great Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica)Observer
petergerber395Description
I am a little confused with the different families -
Stinging nettle – Urtica dioica, verses Cooley's Hedge Nettle - Stachys Cooleyae ?
