Western Narrow-mouthed Toad (Gastrophryne olivacea)Observer

This frog was found at the pond with many, many other Gastrophryne olivacea. The frogs were very vocal, expressing mating calls. You could actually observe the vocal sacs protruding outward when the little frogs would call. The one I found was swimming near the edges of the pond. We also heard the mating calls of Scaphiopus couchii and found 2 engaged in amplexus.

Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor)Observer
sararamirez902Description
I found this smoky red colored caterpillar near the cabins at Chaparral. Ian showed me a really cool defense mechanism they possess. When you tap the head, a brightly colored structure called a osmeterium will pop up and emit a foul smelling odor (moldy cheese) to ward off predators.
