Burgess Shale fossils at Walcott Quarry.

First photo is a mouth appendage thingy, second is the actual mouth.

These animals were so much bigger than the rest of the fauna that at first paleontologists thought their separated parts were different species: the mouth grabby-thingies the back ends of shrimp, and the pineapple ring-like mouth a funny flat thing. Nice scale image from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Burgess_scale_Cor.png

Same fossil still in good shape years later: http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/364581

Seeing the original fossil makes the scientists' reconstructive work more impressive. A dome-shaped, scale- and spine-covered little animal squashed flat.
