Menzies' Metaneckera Moss (Neckera menziesii)Observer
seankaniDescription
This sample was found on a fallen limb in a ravine with limited sunlight. The location was a ravine on Steamboat Island. It has the characteristic growth pattern and undulating leaves of Neckera menziesii, but I still need to look under a microscope to check for a costa.
What
Family HylocomiaceaeObserver
seankaniDescription
This Rhytidiadelphus had the characteristic red stems and leaf arrangement. I have not keyed it out but I expect it is squarrosus. It was found in woody debris and humus beneath a grove of Douglas Fir trees near a ravine on Steamboat Island.
What
Mosses (Phylum Bryophyta)Observer
seankaniDescription
This picture shows a few moss species, but I am focusing ion the short turf that has sporophytes growing out of it. This picture was also taken on the banks of Mud Bay in the early afternoon on a cloudy and cold day. It was growing on a downed branch with perhaps a Neckera or Metaneckera species.
What

This Orthotrichum was found growing on an alder tree along the waters of Mud Bay. It was about ten feet up in the air, hence the shot from below. There were also extensive mats of Kindbergia on the ground, and a variety of lichens on the tree.
