Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus)

Description

As we walked across the path that led to the water front we spotted a mom and a baby killdeer. Friscia added that the killdeer is famous for a "broken wing" distraction display that it performs when a predator gets close to its nest...as the killdeer drags itself along pretending to be injured and the predator follows once it is far away enough from its nest it will pick up speed and fly away.

Description

The red wing black bird was flying around the lagoon as we walked down the path that led toward the open water. The specks of white and yellow were just as vibrant in person as they are in the picture shown here. Only the males have this sort of black and vibrant mix, whereas the females (not observed here) are tan and speckled to blend in with their nests.

California Newt (Taricha torosa)

Description

By: Monica Ruelas
While hiking on the Santa Monica Mountain, the group came across a small "waterfall" that flows right beneath a small bridge marking what seemed to be the midpoint of the hike. Seeing as there wasn't much rain this past winter the "waterfall" was more like droplets of water that fell upon the creek that also resembled scattered puddles. In the creek we saw a groups of California Newts squirming around. One of the newts we observed in particular was approximately 5-6in in length. It was very small and had the infamous orange/yellow underbelly.
