A backyard pitfall trap was placed under a Griselinia littoralis hedge, in a sunny spot, for 6 days (29 April to 5 May 2015). Pea straw covered the soil.
When the pitfall trap was removed no invertebrates were found.
The most likely reason for this is that the gap between the lip/edge of the trap and the ground level soil was too far a distance for invertebrates to travel.

Tracking tunnel baited with smooth peanut butter and placed in central city backyard garden, weighed down by paving stones, under a griselinia hedge.
Left out for 3 nights from 21 to 23 April 2015.
Tracks of a house cat were identified (it looks like they were able to reach into the tracking tunnel touching part of the ink pad but not the peanut butter.
However an unidentified species has left very tiny orderly footprints (see photos). In a class discussion it was suggested that it might be footprints of a slater/woodlouse.
We do have hedgehogs in the backyard as well as an abundance of rats and mice (which our three cats take turns at hunting) but no hedgehog/rat/mouse footprints were observed. This is most likely due to the presence of three resident cats that occupy the property, and one stray cat that regularly passes through the property.

wookieetoolboxDescription
No birds observed in this session. I think it was just the blackbirds I could hear. Lots of birdsong in adjacent properties. Our trees do not currently have any flowers or fruit. This lack of food as well as the presence of resident cats is keeping birds away from our backyard.

Saw one dunnock in plum street in middle of our backyard. Stayed for a few minutes then left. Our trees do not currently have any flowers or fruit. This lack of food as well as the presence of resident cats is keeping birds away from our backyard, though they are abundant in neighbouring properties (which are all resident free).

Blackbird perched on kowhai at the edge of the garden. Stayed 30 seconds at the most then left. Our trees do not currently have any flowers or fruit. This lack of food as well as the presence of resident cats is keeping birds away from our backyard, though they are abundant in neighbouring properties (which are all resident free).

Site is a sheltered cottage garden with mostly NZ native plants (trees, shrubs, vines).
The Cabbage White butterflies like to fly around the native jasmine vine but don't land on it.
