Help please. I know I've seen someone else post these weird arthropods that attach dung and other debris onto their back.
Tadpole shrimp. Only two genera in this order (Triops & Lepidurus), but no idea how to distinguish them.
This group is considered a living fossil and have not changed much since the Triassic.
I only saw them this one wet season, so I'm guessing that they don't hatch every year. Their eggs in the sediment must be very resilient to survive the hot Kalahari summers.
Not 100% confident of ID. The eyebrow looks more distinct than the A. hypoleucos in my guide book, but the white shoulder patch (combined with the yellow legs) seems diagnostic. The wings look barred.
Common attracted lepidopteran to the light. Large.
Swarms of tadpoles in this overflowing Kalahari pan during the rainy season.
Tame bat-eared fox, named Basil. Raised by people since a pup, Basil was a fan of cheese, causing sh*t with the terrier, and wandering about. Not a fan of children. Free-ranging. Seen at the bar.
Juvenile leopard tortoise.
Location approximate.
Not sure if this is a grass? Not in my guide to grasses of Southern Africa.
There are 3 species of Psammobates in Southern Africa. Good site to distinguish those species is the Biodiversity Explorer.
House gecko, but doesn't look like Cosmopolitan house gecko (Hemidactylus mabouia). Not 100% confident of ID.
